Breakthrough Listen

Breakthrough Listen is the world’s most comprehensive technosignature search program, part of the Breakthrough Initiatives founded by Yuri Milner. Headquartered at Oxford University, with Dr. Andrew Siemion as Principal Investigator.

Survey Scope

  • 1 million nearby stars
  • The entire galactic plane of the Milky Way
  • 100 nearby galaxies

Telescope Partners

  • Allen Telescope Array (Hat Creek, California)
  • Green Bank Telescope (West Virginia)
  • Parkes Observatory (Australia)

AI Detection Breakthrough (2025)

According to src-seti-ai-breakthrough-listen-2025, Breakthrough Listen partnered with NVIDIA to develop a deep learning system achieving 600x speed improvement in detecting Fast Radio Bursts and anomalous signals. The system:

  • Processes data 160x faster than real-time (previously 4x slower)
  • Reduces false positives by ~10x
  • Improves detection accuracy by 7%
  • Uses the NVIDIA Holoscan platform to bypass traditional dedispersion techniques

This transforms seti from retrospective analysis into real-time monitoring.

Key Personnel

  • Dr. Andrew Siemion: Principal Investigator, Oxford University
  • Peter Ma: Led the AI research (University of Toronto / UC Berkeley)

Parallel Efforts

The 2023 VLA + MeerKAT deep-target search on k2-18b (reported 2026, src-k2-18b-technosignature-null-2026) is a parallel technosignatures campaign using different facilities. Its filtering pipeline is portable to Listen’s hycean-world targets.
