Brazil is a South American nation with one of the longest institutional histories of UAP investigation outside the United States.

UAP History

  • 1954: A Brazilian Air Force captain publicly declared at the Escola Superior de Guerra the reality of “flying objects” and their advanced technology.
  • 1977: operation-prato — a Brazilian government investigation of UAP activity in the states of Maranhão and Pará. Related cases involving indigenous tribes were later investigated by the Brazilian Federal Police (2013–2016).
  • 1986: The Night of the UFOs — 21 large UAP (some estimated at 100 m diameter) tracked by radar over four states; Brazilian Air Force scrambled fighter jets.
  • 1996: The varginha-incident — alleged January 20 capture of two non-human entities by Brazilian authorities near Varginha, Minas Gerais. Witnesses include physician italo-venturelli; subject of james-fox’s 2022 documentary Moment of Contact.
  • 2022: The Brazilian Senate convened a formal UAP hearing on June 24, organized by Senator eduardo-girao, directly modeled on contemporaneous U.S. Congressional hearings (src-brazil-uap-senate-hearings-2026).
  • 2026: The 30th anniversary of the Varginha incident was marked by a UAP press conference hosted by james-fox; Rep. eric-burlison attended and used the platform to call for U.S. UAP-disclosure legislation (src-burlison-marching-orders-2026-01).

Context

Brazil’s Air Force has maintained documented case files on UAP since at least the 1950s. High-ranking Brazilian Air Force officers attended the 2022 Senate hearing, described as “a clear sign they remain interested.” Survey data suggests nearly 60 million Brazilians believe in intelligent life beyond Earth.
