Barksdale Air Force Base is a U.S. Air Force installation in Louisiana, home of the 2nd Bomb Wing and a portion of the U.S. B-52 Stratofortress fleet. Barksdale stores nuclear weapons and constitutes a key component of the airborne leg of the U.S. nuclear triad under STRATCOM.
Between March 9-15, 2026, Barksdale experienced multiple waves of 12-15 drones over sensitive flight-line areas. A confidential March 15 briefing obtained by ABC News described drones with “non-commercial signal characteristics, long-range control links and resistance to jamming” and assessed that the lights on the aircraft suggested operators may have been “testing security responses.” The incident prompted a shelter-in-place order that was lifted later the same day. The Barksdale waves occurred during the opening weeks of operation-epic-fury and coincided with increased security concerns about Iranian retaliation.
A March 27, 2026 unclassified briefing to Sen. bill-cassidy (R-LA) framed the events somewhat differently: five unauthorized drone flights total during the window — one confirmed hobbyist, four of unclear origin — with two drones physically recovered, though officials were uncertain whether the recovered hardware was connected to the incursions. Base official Charles Hoffman characterized events as “a period of drones” rather than a continuous swarm, and no drone activity was detected on March 13 and 14. B-52s at Barksdale “sit almost entirely out in the open,” and the fleet is scarce (only 76 airframes total), elevating concern about flightline vulnerability in the wake of Ukraine’s operation-spider-web.
According to stephen-bryen’s April 2026 analysis (src-spy-drones-nuclear-triad-2026-04), Barksdale is transitioning to replace minot-afb as the primary nuclear weapons storage site for B-52s — reducing delivery time from ~3 hours to minutes — which elevates its strategic value and makes the drone incursions especially significant. Bryen frames the March 2026 incursions as part of a coordinated Chinese intelligence campaign targeting all three legs of the nuclear-triad, alongside spy balloon overflights of malmstrom-afb and the Offutt AFB photography arrest.
