The U.S. nuclear triad is the three-legged strategic nuclear deterrent architecture:

LegPlatformKey Base(s)
Land-based ICBMsMinuteman IIImalmstrom-afb, minot-afb, F.E. Warren AFB
Submarine-launched ballistic missiles (SLBMs)Trident II D5Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay, Naval Base Kitsap
Strategic bombersB-52H, B-2 Spiritbarksdale-afb, whiteman-afb

Command of the triad runs through us-stratcom at offutt-afb.

Intelligence Targeting (2023–2026)

All three legs of the nuclear triad have been subject to documented Chinese intelligence collection:

  • malmstrom-afb (2023): Chinese spy balloon loitered 24–48 hours over 150 Minuteman III ICBM silos; reportedly maneuvered via Iridium satellite and exfiltrated data through U.S. ISPs. A 75-page exploitation report was prepared but not publicly released.
  • malmstrom-afb (2024–2026): Multiple unidentified drone swarm incidents over missile silos and launch control centers; no drones captured or launch points identified.
  • barksdale-afb (March 2026): Multi-night drone campaign targeting B-52 nuclear weapons storage areas; single drone breached perimeter March 8; 12–15 drones in four-hour waves March 9. See src-drone-incursions-epic-fury-2026-03 and src-spy-drones-nuclear-triad-2026-04.
  • offutt-afb (March 2026): Chinese student Tianrui Liang photographed aircraft at STRATCOM HQ; arrested at JFK April 9, 2026.

According to stephen-bryen’s analysis, U.S. nuclear bases lack meaningful air defenses and no drones have been shot down or traced to their operators.

FY27 Posture — Triad Modernization and Testing (April 2026)

In Hegseth’s April 29, 2026 FY27 department-of-war posture testimony to the house-armed-services-committee, the U.S. nuclear triad is committed to modernization plus an explicit statement that the U.S. “will test nuclear weapons and nuclear delivery systems on an equal basis as others” — the first written-testimony-level reference to U.S. nuclear testing in the disclosure-era record (src-hegseth-fy27-posture-testimony-2026-04).

Connection to UAP

The nuclear-uap-correlation pattern — documented UAP activity near nuclear weapons sites — predates the current Chinese intelligence focus by decades, raising distinct but related questions about nuclear-site security. robert-salas claims a 1967 UAP incident at Malmstrom disabled multiple Minuteman ICBMs.
